Owning and running your own business can be difficult. You put so much time and effort into each and every work day. You show up early and stay late. You can sell your products all day, but hey, we all need a break sometimes.

Your website is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Unless you’re a giant corporation with thousands of employees, chances are you aren’t going to be available all day, every day. Business owners need sleep too!!

Lay the foundation.

Websites can provide information and content, drive sales, and reach thousands of people, all for little cost. The development of your webpage is important and should have lots of time and energy devoted to it.  This isn’t something you can put out there with just a few days work!  Websites take time to develop, curate and promote, so make sure you’re giving it the time it deserves.

Think of it like this...when building a custom house, you need plans.  You expect quality service and pay for things to be done correctly.  You decide how many rooms you want, how many bathrooms, what flooring looks best and what color paint to put on the walls. You hire an architect to turn these ideas into plans.  Your contractor oversees the project and makes sure that everything is done according to the plans you decided on.  But what if they decided to cut a few corners and ignore some of these plans?

This can result in wasted time, energy, money and ultimately can cause your house to fall apart and end up looking like this...is your website a 24/7 sales rep for your business?

Building a website is no different.

You need to put a lot of time and effort into building your webpages, otherwise you’ll end up with an expensive, uninformative, and dare I say, boring website.

Laying the groundwork for your site is of the utmost importance, because your website drives sales.  As mentioned earlier, your webpage is your sales rep all day, everyday. Why not have it make a great impression?!

Design with the customer in mind.

So often we think about what makes our company look the best, the coolest, the most cutting edge.  But your customer wants to know how you can help THEM.  While blaring music and funny cat memes might be cool for MySpace, it’s not good for a professional business (unless you’re in the business of funny cat memes, in which case, go right ahead).  People make assumptions about you and your business based on what they see online, so why not take the time to make it the best it can be?

Once you have a well-developed site, you can start creating and promoting interesting content to attract customers and engage with them.  This opens up the dialogue between you and potential clients!

HINT: If you're including images on your website, which we recommend you do (remember when we warned you about having a boring website?), make sure that you have the rights to them. If you're not careful, you can have a lawsuit on your hands. Luckily, this is easily avoidable!

Your webpage is always there.  It doesn’t go home at 5 o’clock, it doesn’t have weekends or go on vacation. Your site drives sales, so lay the foundation, make plans, and take your time!
